Study on formation mechanism of serrated chip of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy based on shear slip theory

Titanium alloy is a typical hard-to-machine metal and lot of serrated chips are often formed in the cutting process. The appearance will not only cause fluctuation force, resulting decline accuracy, but also lead to rapid wear tools. In this study, formation mechanism chip Ti-6Al-4V titanium was investigated by two-dimensional simulation model alloy, which established using Johnson–Cook constitutive fracture model. It found that shear slip occurs with decrease band overall stress during chips. peak temperature reached at end band.
